In 2003 a member of
the American Special Forces contacted Guy Black, Aero
Vintage (AV) director, and sent photographs taken inside a
huge scrapyard East of Kabul, showing the amazing sight of a
dozen or so Hinds and other pre-war biplanes (which turned
out to be Ro 37 bis), in a generally well reduced
state, but some with engines.
With the Hawker biplane stable pretty well covered by AV, it
was felt that this information needed to be publicised in
order to save the Hinds for posterity, by finding other
parties to recover them (after all, who needs more than one
Hind?). Copies of the photographs were sent to magazines
covering vintage aviation, and sure enough a number of
potential enthusiasts contacted us for more details. After
sifting though the enquiries, it was decided to pass the
information to Patrick Chriswick, as he seemed determined
and resourceful enough to succeed. And so, as they say, the
rest is history.
They are now all back, awaiting new owners, so that other
enthusiasts can tackle the inevitable major restoration
work. AV’s sister restoration company Retrotec Ltd., remains
in the background ready to offer help from complete
restorations of airframe and engines to the supply of spar
and rib sets, to a single Fairey cowling fastener (see
www.retrotec-ltd.co.uk ).
