Pre-war Hawker publicity shot of a new Hind at Brooklands

In 1967 the Rolls Royce aero-engine representative in Afghanistan stumbled upon an astonishing sight. Hidden away at the far end of Kabul airport were several pre-war British Hawker Hinds and in an amazing state of preservation and completeness. After some years of negotiation, the then Royal Afghan Air Force agreed to donate four of the best ones for museum display and preservation; the others were consigned to a scrap yard (see Scrapyard Recovery). With the help of the Ford Motor Company, these four aircraft were transported back to the UK. One went to the RAF Museum, one to the Shuttleworth Collection, and the other went to the Canadian National Aviation Museum. All these are now restored and on display, and the Shuttleworth Collection‘s regularly flies in airshows. The other one simply disappeared.…..

After many false leads and an intense search, this rare survivor was eventually found and acquired by us, Aero Vintage Ltd., based in the UK. This aircraft, L 7181, was an ex-RAF machine, having flown with 211 Squadron. The restoration work is well established, and at this stage we are considering incorporating dual control for inexperienced or non-pilot owners to enjoy.
